In China, is it still considered bad luck to have a baby shower before the birth?

Or is that just an older tradition? Some of my clmates are having a baby shower for a Chinese doctor/professor at our school. They had one for her first pregnancy a few years ago, too (which turned out fine). I just wonder if the doc is trying to be gracious but is secretly mortified or if modern zhonguoren are ok with the pre-birth showers.
