MY bf is depressed and doesn't know where to go for help. What can I do?
Many areas offer social services of varying degrees, depending upon where you live. Whether it be your local TV ifo channel that gives dates of meetings & gatherings etc or in your local newspaper or phone directory you must look. As they say: "Seek & you shall find~" It may seem difficult or awkward at the beginning but that is usually because you are feeling out of your daily realm of agenda. Once you begin really seeking istance the doors of opportunity begin opening. Try calling a 'Nurse Help Line' that many local medical establishments offer as a courtesy...this call could lead you in the appropriate direction toward your first step. Also every area has Mental Health clinics that one can simply walk into, request to speak with someone who can advise/ist with counseling for depression, they will direct you in the right way, if not possibly have the resources available right there or make an appointment. Keep in mind that just because one has no insurance, all you need to do is mention that you are self pay! No insurance does NOT mean no care or less care! Always remember you are just entitled as the next person to receive help! Do NOT allow lack of insurance to keep you from seeking any medical intervention EVER! Also, IF by chance he is a 'student' then many educational establishments offer counselors...have him SEE ONE! You can also go into a local medical walk-in clinic to be seen discreetly by the physician & the doctor can then use his knowledge & resources to guide you in the proper direction toward achieving help. Remember that depression is also an illness, something our body reacts by telling us things are just not right~ the word 'disease' defines the most simple situation> dis [prefix] meaning not/not right, not ok,not of norm, etc and the word 'ease' [suffix] comfort, freedom from difficulty. Try not to think what the disease 'word' always implies when we hear it & quickly attach its meaning to something meaning serious sickness...this mind thought tends to make people shy away from getting appropriate mental heath care...isn't that most unfortunate? It is! I hope that you will continue to pursue the avenues towards medical intervention...caring is a wonderful et, your boyfriend is lucky he has someone like you to really care~ Try visiting www.webmd.com type in depression then read & learn a little bit...then try typing in your zipcode area for mental health or counsel psychology/phsychiatry and the site will list all medical in your area. WebMd is an excellent easy to understand site. Take care!
