How many Americans are Reversing their allegences like my Died in the Wool Chiropractor did?

my chiro is a staunch republican and fundamentalist christian. so yesterday my husband said to him, " not that i'm either one, but are you a dem or a republican?" He said, "well I thought I was a republican, but I have to rethink that, I think they've gone too radical and not me anymore. He said he couldn't vote dem, but he wasn't going to vote rep. across the board anymore even the ones that sound good are not apparently to be trusted. Wonder if a third party may gain ground?
